Power Transformers
In-house knowledge and technology to design and manufacture 3-phase and single-phase power transformers up to 200 MVA, 240 kV class, while meeting client needs regarding voltage regulation, sound level, low losses and different fluid types: mineral oil, natural esters, synthetic esters, and silicone.
Autotransformers

Typically used in transmission systems, Northern Transformer designs and manufactures auto-transformers. The low voltage and high voltage sides have electrical connections made in series and they share physical features with our power transformers.
Padmounts
With over 35 years of pad-mounts experience, you can rely on robust and dependable transformers to supply the single- and three-phase loads needed for commercial, industrial, storage and renewable applications.
Generator Step-up GSU
Hydroelectric, wind farm, and solar and energy storage facilities three-phase liquid-filled power transformers for grid connection purposes. For high current applications, specific design and manufacturing processes are used.​

Mobile and Skid Mounted
Mobile applications up to 240 kV and 50 MVA. These transformers feature extra compact designs leveraging NOMEX and oil directed, air forced (ODAF) technology, i.e. pumped oil flow with chillers which allow them to be mounted on trailers and skids.​
Evolution System
EVOLUTION®, the transformer's central control and monitoring system, integrates all necessary functions into a single cabinet. Northern Transformer customizes it to match the needs of the client.
Construction
TANK
Tank welding is performed to CSA’s W59-M1989 requirements and a dye penetrant leak test is performed on all welds and seams to identify and eliminate any leaks. To ensure a long tank life, tanks are shot blasted with metal beads to a white metal and immediately primed and painted using a UV resistant two-part epoxy or powder coated. All tanks are engineered and manufactured to withstand full vacuum.
COILS
All coil winding is performed by hand by our skilled winders with decades of experience. Depending on the application and customer’s preference, we use copper conductor and winding types of disc, helical and layer.
ASSEMBLY
Great care is taken into our assembly work. All insulation material is of the highest quality and tolerances are selected to ensure longevity and higher BIL withstand than typically found in the market. For paper wrapped conductor insulation, Northern Transformer uses Thermally Upgraded Kraft paper and we offer our customers the option of using premium winding insulations such as NOMEX for high temperature applications.
CORE
Northern Transformer’s designs are primarily based upon a three limb cruciform core design. Where customers require lower core losses (No Load Losses) or have noise concerns, higher grade core steel is available. For larger transformers, various core cooling options are available.
ACCESSORIES
The transformer market has a wide range of accessories available to allow the customer to monitor and adjust the transformer while in service. Northern Transformer can assist with the selection and incorporation of accessories to meet your unique needs.
