Northern Transformer Corporation, a leading Canadian manufacturer of high-voltage power transformers, is proud to announce the groundbreaking of its second state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Ontario. Located in the Innisfil Heights Employment Area, this new facility investment of $207 million represents a major milestone in the company’s continued growth and its commitment to supporting Canada’s energy infrastructure while also creating new opportunities for job growth, innovation, and supply chain development in the region.
“With this new facility, we are expanding our footprint in Ontario to meet the rising demand for mission-critical Large Power Transformers for our North American utility clients,” said Alexei Miecznikowski, CEO of Northern Transformer Corporation. “This investment not only boosts our production capacity and technical capabilities, but also drives job creation, innovation, and supply chain growth in the region.”
In support of the state-of-the-art facility, Northern Transformer Corporation received a Government of Canada investment of $6 million through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), and a Government of Ontario investment of $10.5 million through the Invest Ontario Fund, subject to a definitive agreement.
Alexei also expressed gratitude to key partners and supporters:
“We are deeply grateful to our clients: Hydro One for their long-term vision and early commitment, OPG and Bruce Power for their collaboration, continuous support, and whose key projects are driving the economy forward.”
“Special thanks to the Town of Innisfil, whose early recognition of this project’s potential and ongoing partnership have been instrumental to its success.”
The 17,000 square metre (183,000 square foot) facility is purpose-built for the manufacture and testing of high voltage Large Power Transformers ranging from 230 to 500 kV class with power handling capability up to 750 MVA. Strategically located on a rail-accessible site, the facility will enable efficient shipments to project sites across North America. It will feature ultra-clean manufacturing environments with temperature and humidity controls, large-scale winding and assembly equipment, and a fully isolated, extra-high voltage testing laboratory. Northern Transformer is working with a proven development team, including Baldassarra Architects and Metrus Construction, to deliver this advanced facility.
Operations are anticipated to begin in 2028. This expansion is a direct response to our clients’ increasing demand for high-quality, reliable, and timely power transformers to support grid modernization and electrification initiatives across the continent.
“Our clients appreciate and value long-term, mutually beneficial relationships,” said Giovanni Marcelli, Chairman of Northern Transformer. “This investment is a testament to our commitment to meeting their evolving needs as the energy sector undergoes rapid transformation driven by asset renewal, economic growth, and electrification.”
